15.00 Afternoon Tea And Networking Break

15.30 Mechanical Interaction Of Multiple Fractures:

Explore the impact of the spacing/number of perforation clusters of horizontal shale gas wells

  • “Stress changes substantially with the creation of multiple fractures”. Assess this assertion through considering the following variables:
  • Stress concentration occurs between fractures
  • Both minimum and maximum horizontal stresses are changed
  • Shear stress is induced around tips of edge fractures, favorable to create complex fracture networks
  • The number/spacing of fractures have significant will have a significant impact on fracture geometries. Understand the implications of this by examining how:
  • Edge fractures and sub-center fractures are asymmetrical and no longer elliptic-like
  • Sub-center and center fractures have much smaller fracture width than that of the edge fractures
  • The closer the fractures are placed, the smaller the widths of center and sub-center fractures will be
  • Number/spacing of fractures need to be optimized
